Apparently the term “postliberalism” is trending, which parallels postmodernism in that postmodernism had two branches: one was merely an update of modernism that wanted a systematic method for understanding reality, and the other was rejection of systematic understanding in all areas.
These two have little in common except general topicality. The same was true of Romantics, some of whom were delusional progressives and others worshipers of the ancient past who recognized the continuity of meaning and reality as necessary for transcendent (escaping the individual!) thought.
We are going to have two forms of “postliberalism”:
The big point is that the world has moved on from liberalism. After the Victorian Era, it took over because society had grown so much that “managing the less fortunate” became the major topic in every government in the first world.
Their solution was ultimately to extend feudalism to the whole population, buying the silence of the herd with benefits and taxing them into a state of demoralized PTSD conformity. This maintained order, so, the bureaucrats reasoned, everything was under control.
Liberalism — the idea that equality exists, should exist, or is the only moral good therefore we should work toward it before all else on a Utopian basis — took over in the post-Victorian Era, dominated in the world wars, and took total control in the 1960s.
The 1960s matured in the 1990s, when the Clinton era finally reified all of what liberalism desired, and the Boomers took over with their agenda of civil rights and mixed economies (backdoor Keynesian socialism).
By the end of the 1990s, however, things were pretty grim, about how they had been after FDR, JFK, LBJ, Carter, and other great liberal reformers. Liberalism does not work! That offended the diversity voters, from the Irish and Italians through Jews and Orientals, so we tried it one more time with O’Bama and O’Biden.
At this point, it should be clear that liberalism has failed hard in the US, UK, and EU. It has killed us off through dysgenics and falling reproduction rates. Our governments are bankrupt, our institutions corrupt, and our infrastructure dysfunctional. The Western miracle has been reversed by liberalism.
All of us in the “counter-revolution” want postliberalism of a specific sort: we want to end and bury the fixation on equality. It is simply a lie that is both irrelevant to success and a bringer of failure. We are past liberalism now because we tried it and it failed, so anyone sane wants something else.
