Monkey on Your Back

Heroin addicts used to speak in metaphor of a “monkey on my back,” meaning the obligation that led them to ruin which they could never quite identify, mainly because they were addicted to it. A monkey on your back hides and you can never quite reach him to throttle him.

Humanity produces a massive amount of news and science. These are mostly studies or white papers on some aspect of what troubles us, and all of them recommend either more distribution of money or more medicalizing of pathologies.

These strategies fall short because they look at effects, not causes. The cause of depression is usually a lack of direction, but that has many effects, so we play whack-a-mole with those until the patient gives up and dies.

This extends to politics, too, and creates a “cuckline” that few will cross. Getting across that line requires rejecting individualism, and instead looking at the world through a biological, natural, holistic, genetic, systemic, and Darwinistic filter.

Most people process policy questions through asking, “How would this feel if it happened to me?” They project themselves onto others — they mistakenly call this “empathy” and “altruism” — and ask the same question.

Anything that inconveniences the individual is bad, in their view. This reflects the fundamental attribute of individualism, which is an attempt to regulate their own emotions by suppressing notice of parts of reality that make them afraid.

They are trying to maintain the fiction-absolute, or the narrative they tell themselves that makes their life seem important and the best possible option they could have had. Oftentimes this requires portraying themselves as victims.

To cross the cuckline means giving all of this up. Instead of a battle of personalities and emotions, they must talk about actions in terms of their consequences not just on individuals, but the whole of reality.

When you cross the cuckline, you see that the monkey on your back is a problem, and it is at a level beneath what most will diagnose. The conservative media complains about our deviations from the 1890s and the Leftist media pitch solutions from Victorian sci-fi.

The conservatives especially specialize in pointing out how people are no longer honoring the practices of the past, but somehow they never talk about the goals of the past, or achieving a state like a futurist-medievalist fusion like everyone wants.

Conservatives specialize in reacting to imperfect application of the current Leftist theory. The welfare state is not doing well! they say, missing the big point: the welfare state is paradoxical because it inverts natural selection, therefore is always toxic and fatal.

Until you get to the monkey on your back — the actual source of your addiction that you are afraid to quit — …you will never do anything but offer two faces of the same inertia of the system. Conservatives want smaller government, not a more functional form of government.

With awareness of realism, a type of hard consequentialism that looks at the impact of our actions on the whole of life rather than the opinions of individuals about it, we start to get a vision of what that monkey might look like. He is beautiful like Satan, and brainless.

His brainlessness makes him innocent, and since we think in “moral” or “medical” but never biological terms, we think innocence of intent is defense against bad results in reality. In the minds of human individuals it may be, but to nature and history, it is not.

Both sides, all religions, and every academic discipline will come up with its own bogeymen and scapegoats. It is the loss of Christ, or maybe the Jews, perhaps the Rich, or it could be White people are evil. No one is sure because nothing quite fits.

Look into your calmer inner self. You know the name of the monkey before I type it: the monkey is the belief that all people belong in our society, when reality says that we need only the ones who contribute something, and all the others are genetic degeneration and failure.

Equality sits on your back where you cannot reach it and cannot see it. It programs your decisions to be like the conservatives, demanding thirty years ago but now, or the Leftists, demanding that conjectural ideas be treated as hard reality.

The only escape is to reject equality, humanism, empathy, pluralism, egalitarianism, civil rights, and all other things which are not based on a constant sorting pattern that prioritizes the best above the rest, instead of the individual above reality.
