Ukraine and Greenland

You hear very few things that make sense in the media because every public figure speaks in terms of rationalizations and symbols, instead of stating what they actually want. For example, we are told that Ukraine is about missile shields, but maybe it is about Russian expansion.

As was said here some years ago, Ukraine is about warm-water ports. The touchstone issue may be Joe 0’Biden’s bungling attempt to make a missile shield for Europe, but the actual cause was the Russian desire for Soviet Union status again, which requires warm-water ports.

As with the U.S. Navy, after victory over the Axis was achieved in 1945, the Soviet Navy continued to take delivery of submarines designed before the war. However, Soviet submarine production during the war was slowed by the German occupation of much of the western portion of the country, including the Ukraine. — Norman Polmar and Kenneth J. Moore, Cold War Submarines: The Design and Construction of US and Soviet Submarines (2004) p 22

Similarly, Trump wants Greenland ostensibly for a missile shield, but more accurately as a base to defend against Russo-Chinese submarines coming through the Arctic. He recognizes that Europe does not have the resources to deploy there, nor will allow the US to be as radical as it needs to be.

The world is reorienting, not against a “unipolar order,” but against the postwar consensus that mixed-economy liberal democracy (MELD) globalism could hold back the chaos. All it did was focus us toward past threats for which we overcompensated.

The new threat is that diversity fails at both nation-state and international levels, so the first world has to prepare for yet another onslaught by the third world. We are not headed to a “multipolar order,” but a world where the first world breaks away from the failed states.
