This man gets a great deal of flak for predicting that a population explosion would doom humanity. He was right about the end result, but wrong about the methods and timing, which makes sense given that those are the hardest things to predict.
Like Pentti Linkola and Thomas Malthus, he was essentially correct even if fuzzy on the specifics. Like Oswald Spengler and Aldous Huxley, he predicted the end result of a collision between elemental forces and showed that the road narrowed ahead.
Do we have an overpopulation problem? Clearly: pollution is everywhere, whether microplastics (if we believe), PFAS, particulate pollution, or the increasing radioactivity and mercury in our oceans. There are too many people.
At this point we have closer to nine billion humans and two-thirds of them live in cities, leading to an Urban Heat Island Effect that liberals call “climate change,” but already the quality of life is in decline and cancers are skyrocketing.
This is how nature works: not sudden big changes, but pervasive ones formed of thousands of details that become inescapable. The end is not a sudden drop off a cliff, but a steady fall down an embankment until you are in a crevasse too deep to escape from.
With a billion people on Earth, humans and nature can coexist; at numbers above that, we start The Ecocide, or the total loss of biodiversity and autonomous ecosystems. We will be left with a few ornamental plants and generalist species in big city parks.
Sure, there is plenty of natural land, but it is divided into tiny little plots by roads and power lines. This fractures natural habitats. Even more, this land is all reachable by airborne pollution and frequently humans dump tons of trash into it.
As migrants surge into the West by the tens of billions, it is hard to argue that we do not have too many people. In addition, since automation will replace many of these, there are soon going to be lots of people with hands out, rubbing their bellies.
The public Right — basically variants of cuck RINO — call Ehrlich a sociopath, and of course the Left says he is correct and the best solution is for White people only to stop breeding. But his point remains strong, and this unsettles all of us.
