Right now the people who did well at education and got into positions of power are united in a bleat-repeat: social media is bad. Why might they say this, one asks? You get ahead in democracy by always having a scapegoat that misdirects attention from the problems you have created.

Once the Censorship-Industrial Complex broke when Congress investigated and DOGE defunded its supporters, it became clear that mainstream social media was highly censored and as a result has become a complete echo chamber.

My guess is that much of America has defected from social media because of the censorship. Why throw hours of your life into something that can be deleted if one person complains? This is why many users, especially the young, have moved to chat apps like Telegram.

Mainstream social media has become an echo chamber because it insists on removing non-Leftist opinion:

The people who have migrated to Bluesky tend to be those who feel the most visceral disgust for Musk and Trump, plus a smattering of those who are merely curious and another smattering who are tired of the AI slop and unregenerate racism that increasingly pollutes their X feeds…

All this is pretty off-putting for folks who aren’t already rather progressive, and that creates a threefold problem for the ones who dream of getting the old band back together. Most obviously, it makes it hard for the platform to build a large enough userbase for the company to become financially self-sustaining, or for liberals to amass the influence they wielded on old Twitter. There, they accumulated power by shaping the contours of a conversation that included a lot of non-progressives. On Bluesky, they’re mostly talking among themselves.

If you post actual Right-wing content on Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, Threads, Reddit, Pinterest, Ravelry, and the like, you will find your account gets deleted. All of your connections that you made there go away, you are publicly shamed, and your opinions are silenced.

We can tell this is true because the same thing is happening to decentralized social media which is both non-corporate and in theory independent, as the graph above shows.

Leftists censored people on Twitter until Elon Musk bought it and was willing to run the risk of losing advertisers to protect some speech rights. Their censorship continues at a rapid pace on all the other big sites and now, the open source free and non-corporate ones.

This is driving normal people off social media and leaving an aggregate of misfits, including the spiteful mutants who make up most of the Left, to talk about things they already agree on, creating a type of “heat death” for conversation.

For that reason, the talking heads are condemning social media because it has failed as a propaganda organ and is being surpassed by free speech social media like X, the free fedi, and Gab.

That means that in the future, social media will swing to the Right, since the Left has run away into hugboxes through their intolerance of legitimate viewpoints, and now these hugboxes are revealing that they do not like each other much or have anything to say.

No wonder the talking heads want to get rid of social media now!
