The dirty secret to modernity is that the procedural/bureaucracy people are holding the good life hostage.
Want to have a wife, kids, house, and maybe retire? Then you have to go through The System, which mostly means paying a lot of taxes, filling out a lot of forms, and receiving almost nothing for it.
Ironically the American population is quick to blame the cost of the military for their high taxes. However, military costs are less than a quarter of the entire budget. Where does the rest go?
No one asks because no one wants to seem to be poor and struggling. They just pay their jizya to government and demand more from their bosses. At most jobs, you do a whole lot of nothing, mostly going to meetings, so it makes people very cynical.
We are held hostage by neurotics because they wield the Heckler’s Veto. If you do not compromise with them, they wreck everything they can; basically, if something does not make them feel better mentally, they throw a tantrum until you give in.
And if you compromise, you introduce not just some of what they want, but the theory behind it, which is rejection of reality itself in favor of a religious order in which every human is magically important for reasons unknown.
Once they get in to the system, they take it over. Anything that does not induce happy mental states that help them regulate their out-of-control personalities becomes not just unwanted but an enemy that must be conquered.
They go to war with reality itself. It is offensive to them, so anyone who refuses to join them in condemning it is also an enemy. This serves as a great test, too, because it separates the job-workers who are conformist and addicted to procedure over results into a polity.
These people, ruled by “The Optics,” do what makes others have warm feelings, and so together they form a mass that vetoes anything else. Soon you must include them in any action, and in the compromise, they always win because their ideas are the least realistic therefore beyond debating.
Once they have power, they hold you hostage. The cost of everything goes up; the taxes go up; you have to work constantly and please others by saying warm feelings things, just in order to live. If you do not, you end up poor and have no good mating opportunities.
At that point, society breeds down. The ugliest, least mentally stable, most social, and most genetically muddled men get all the prettiest girls, and any man who can stand up for himself dies childless alone in the countryside.
This gets you a third world population: unclear heritage, very social, very selfish, and oblivious to anything but the bourgeois concerns of their own money, power, and status.
Every human society known to history has killed itself through this process. We are doing it again. Every society that allows the Crowd to take over perishes like the Soviets: it penalizes realism and accelerates delusion.
Crowdism arises naturally because people filter out what they fear, and this creates a religion of denial, at which point anyone realistic is an enemy of the state. Any group of humans without hierarchy ends up at this point.
In the meantime, they hold you hostage. You must play by their rules, indulge their illusions, and pay for their sustenance. The bureaucratic establishment arises out of this ability, and it destroys you as it destroys the future of your civilization.
