Christmas is the modern continuation of the old holiday Jul which used tree imagery to convey the change of seasons as a bridge between life and death. Our ancestors adopted Christianity probably in an attempt to make the restive proles quit fornicating wantonly and apply themselves at their jobs, like an early form of Communism.

Nonetheless it is a good time to be thankful for the goodness of the world as we pass from one old tired year to a fresh new one, full of potential and possibility, much as we do when we go past the wall of sleep and find ourselves reborn in a new world with new struggles against entropy and in favor of sanity.

This is a good time to think about what you want to achieve in the coming year that is not for yourself or others, but for the sake of life itself: the transcendental that accepts the goodness of life in goal even if some of its methods scare us.
