Climate change may cut population to one billion

A scientist known for his aggressive stance on climate policy made an apocalyptic prediction on Thursay.

Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, the director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, said that if the buildup of greenhouse gases and its consequences pushed global temperatures 9 degrees Fahrenheit higher than today — well below the upper temperature range that scientists project could occur from global warming — Earth’s population would be devastated.

“In a very cynical way, it’s a triumph for science because at last we have stabilized something –- namely the estimates for the carrying capacity of the planet, namely below 1 billion people,” said Dr. Schellnhuber, who has advised German Chancellor Angela Merkel on climate policy and is a visiting professor at Oxford.

This would prevent further ecocide, and reduce the number of humans to a manageable level. It could be the greatest event in human history, especially if it happens in a way to enforce a bottleneck by intelligence, killing off the irresponsible, stupid, lazy, delusional, etc.

  1. ED says:

Climate destabilization will not kill off the most “irresponsible, stupid, lazy, delusional, etc” as you are (or should be) well aware. It will kill off the most vulnerable, poorest, etc, and this correlates not perfectly but very strongly with those who have emitted the least Greenhouse gasses.

Sane people will not even be happy about the death of the rich, powerful (and dangerously delusional, since you mention that term), and eco-guilty, those who have profitted the most, emitted the most, and brainwashed and advertised the middle class to play along with their game and to keep Consuming…yet I don’t celebrate the idea of their death, not even those guilty.
Regressive and reactionary tendencies are on the other hand are (as is typical) laying the groundwork to celebrate the death of the weakest, most innocent members of the global community, those who have had the least to do with bringing the planet to this point.
