while I agree with what you said, about it being necessary for us to choose the necessary activity over the fun one (we call this discipline), the human mind has trouble tolerating boredom. That is, unless we take pills to make us more productive. But then do we lose our humanity? Why "advance" society past humanity?

My dilemma is this: do we renounce our nature for the survival of our species or do we submit to it for as long as we can live and suffer the consequences?

Absolutely fantastic and so on point! Bravo, author.

While reading, an expression came to mine, that I use way too frequently, when I hear, see, commiserate with friends, acquaintances, and other poor bastards I see all around, look up from their "disaster dejour" with absolute surprise, "When you're up to your ass in alligators, remember who's idea it was to drain the swamp."

I could go on and on, but, you my friend, pretty much said it all.

Neal Stevenson opens up his book, Cryptonomicon, with the statement that life's only real goal seems to be to reproduce, eat, repeat till we kill off all other lifeforms in our immediate surroundings. We're stupendous badasses that have outlived billions of trillions of other species.. and we'll keep fucking and we'll keep eating till there's nothing left.
