It isn't often i find a conservative i agree with, but your posts have a honest clairvoyance that should really make people look around at their world with eyes wide open and say, WHAT THE FUCK. I drive around a suburban wasteland, dilapidated KFC's and burger kings, seedy strip malls, cracked sidewalks, smoggy air, an air of either indifference or hostility between fellow motorists. But don't worry, you can always find refuge in a gated community, where every house looks exactly the same and people can be content with American Idol on their 50inch flat screens and neon green lawns that are no longer a place for children to play (they have their cell phones and videogames) but a relic from a bygone era.

I am 19 and i can safely say this is the WEAKEST generation ever, a generation overly coddled and protected and when confronted with the real world we escape to drugs, alcohol and sex. Teenage rebellion except now commercialized. I am scared for the 5 decade long hangover that will haunt our futures and we will remember in an apathy, dulled further by prescription drug abuse, alcoholism and long hours in unfulfilling jobs and in front of the T.V, we will remember how our youthful energy and active force was spent partying instead of building a future.

The 60's failed. The ideas were there but institutions remained the same and nothing concrete changed. The fallout from the 60's left a generation dissatisfied with their world, a generation that felt it needed to protect their offspring from the world, to shelter them. This inadverdantley created our generation, a weak generation. Sorry world, don't look to us, we have failed, maybe the next generation. "Your children's land shall ye love: let this love be your new nobility,-- the undiscovered in the remotest seas! For it do I bid your sails search and search! Unto your children shall ye make amends for being the children of your fathers: all the past shall ye thus redeem! This new table do I place over you!" F.N

oooh, one thing I have to comment on here: "whole class of scientists who are “partial intelligences” or smart at one thing and one thing only, and oblivious to the whole. "

Nowadays it would be impossible to be aware of the whole of science. Even in one field; to understand to complex workings of the whole of bacteria you would have to spend several lifetimes just reading the bacteria. That is why you get science specialists, because it's the only way to study one area, there is just so much (too much?) stuff out there at the moment to be properly worked on.

What is needed (but is not happening) is more integration between classes of science.
